What is a Super Visa, and how can I obtain one?

For many Ukrainians who are building their lives in Edmonton, the distance from their parents is the most difficult challenge of emigration. Short tourist visas often do not solve the problem, as they limit the stay to six months and force the family to live in constant stress due to the need to extend their status or purchase return tickets. It is for situations like these that the Canadian government created the Super Visa — a unique tool that allows parents and grandparents to not just visit, but actually live with you in Canada for an extended period of time without having to obtain permanent resident status.

This article is a detailed analysis of how this mechanism works, what financial requirements it imposes on you as a sponsor, and how to go through this process in Alberta without making typical mistakes.

What is a Super Visa and how does it differ from a regular visa?

A Super Visa is a multiple-entry visa that is issued for up to ten years. However, its main value lies not in the validity period of the document itself, but in the permitted length of continuous stay. While a regular visitor visa allows your parents to stay in Canada for up to six months per visit, a Super Visa entitles them to live in the country for up to five years consecutively without having to leave. Moreover, if after five years the family decides that the parents should stay longer, this period can be extended for another two years without leaving Canada.

This fundamentally changes the logic of relocation. Your parents can safely sell or rent their home in Ukraine without fear of having to return in six months. They gain stability, and you gain the opportunity to plan your life together for years to come, involving grandparents in raising their grandchildren and fully participating in the Edmonton community.

Financial foundation: Your role as a guarantor

Obtaining a Super Visa is primarily a financial test for the host, i.e., you. The Canadian government is willing to admit seniors for a long period only if they do not become a burden on the social security system. Therefore, the main requirement is that you, as a child or grandchild, have a sufficient level of income. This threshold is called LICO (Low Income Cut-Off) and is reviewed annually.

The difficulty lies in correctly calculating the size of your family. You must count all the people who already live in your home in Edmonton (you, your spouse, children) and add to them the parents you plan to invite. For example, if you are married, have two children, and want to invite your mother, your income must cover the expenses of a family of five. It is impossible to confirm this income with words — the officer will only consider official documents, such as a Notice of Assessment (NOA) from the Canada Revenue Agency or a T4. This means that if you work in Edmonton for cash or have only recently arrived and have not yet filed a tax return, this route may be temporarily closed to you until you officially declare your income.## Insurance policy: Medical security in AlbertaThe next critical step is medical insurance. The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) only covers expenses for residents of the province. Your parents, being here on a Super Visa, are considered temporary residents and are not eligible for free medical care. The Canadian government requires that you purchase a private insurance policy for them from a Canadian insurance company before applying for a visa. The insurance requirements are very clear: it must be valid for at least one year from the date of entry into Canada and cover expenses of at least $100,000. This amount includes hospitalization, doctor visits, and repatriation. The cost of such a policy can be significant, especially for older people (70+ years), and often reaches several thousand dollars per year. However, there are also positive changes: whereas previously the entire amount had to be paid in advance for the year, the government now allows monthly payments if the insurance policy guarantees coverage for the year. There are many insurance brokers in Edmonton who can find the best plan for your parents, taking into account their age and any chronic conditions they may have.## Medical examination: The procedure in detailSince the Super Visa involves long-term residence in close contact with Canadian society, your parents are required to undergo a thorough medical examination. This is not a formal certificate from a general practitioner. The examination must be performed exclusively by a doctor accredited by the immigration service, a so-called “panel physician.”If your parents are in Ukraine or Poland, they will undergo the examination at the appropriate accredited centers there. If they are already in Edmonton as tourists and you are applying for a Super Visa from within Canada (which is also possible in certain cases), you will need to contact local certified doctors. There are several clinics in Edmonton that provide such services, for example, Immigration Medical Exam Clinics in the south or in the city center. The doctor checks your general health, takes a chest X-ray, and does blood tests. The results are sent directly to the immigration service; you do not receive them.

Letter of invitation: More than a formality

A letter of invitation from you must be included in the package of documents. This is not just a courtesy letter, but a legal document. In it, you must clearly state that you assume full financial responsibility for your parents for the entire period of their visit. You must describe their living conditions in detail: whether there is a separate room for them in your home in Edmonton, how their daily life will be organized. The letter must also be accompanied by proof of your status in Canada (a copy of your PR card or citizenship certificate) and proof of family ties (your birth certificate, which lists your parents' names).

Application process and deadlines

The Super Visa application is submitted online through the IRCC portal. This speeds up the process significantly compared to paper applications. After uploading all documents, proof of income, and insurance, your parents will receive a request to submit biometrics (fingerprints) if they have not done so within the last 10 years.

Processing times may vary, but the process usually takes two to four months. This is much faster than sponsorship for permanent residence, which can take years. A successful outcome depends on how thoroughly you have prepared your financial documents and explanation of the purpose of the visit.

Living in Edmonton with your parents

With a Super Visa, your parents can enjoy life in Alberta without the constant fear of violating visa regulations. Edmonton is a great city for seniors thanks to its large Ukrainian community. Here, they can attend Ukrainian churches, communicate in their native language at cultural centers, and find friends their own age, which is critical for psychological comfort in emigration. The Super Visa gives them the opportunity to be part of your Canadian life, see their grandchildren grow up, and maintain their dignity and legal status.
