You usually don't need to bring documents with you to a job interview in Canada. Job interviews focus more on your skills, experience, and personal qualities than on checking your documents. Your documents will be requested at later stages of the hiring process if you are selected for the position. In addition, in very rare cases, you may be told the result immediately after the interview. Usually, you will have to wait at least a few days or weeks.
However, if you are going to an interview, there are a few things you should bring with you:
- A printed copy of your resume. Although the employer already has your resume, an extra copy never hurts. Your resume is your primary marketing tool. Even if you have already sent it by email, have several copies on hand to give to all interviewers if necessary.
- If you submitted your application with a cover letter, it is a good idea to print out copies. This will help remind them of your key achievements and why you are a good fit for the position.
- Documents confirming your right to work in Canada (if you are not a citizen or permanent resident).
- Letters of recommendation from previous employers, if you have them.
- Portfolio or work samples. If your profession requires a portfolio (e.g., for designers, writers, or programmers), be sure to bring it with you. This demonstrates your skills and experience.
Prepare all documents in advance and put them in a folder or briefcase so they don't get wrinkled. Before the interview, make sure all documents are up to date and reflect your latest achievements and skills.
