How to behave during a video interview?

Video interviews are becoming an increasingly popular format in Canada. Recently, many employers have been inviting candidates to interviews via Teams or Google Meets, even if you are located in the same city. They usually start with a video interview and then schedule a face-to-face meeting with the selected candidates. Your behavior during the interview will significantly affect your impression as a candidate, so you need to prepare in advance.

Prepare your equipment

  • Check your equipment. Make sure your computer, webcam, and microphone are working properly. Download the software you need for the video meeting if you don't already have it. Test your video and audio connection in advance.
  • Make sure you have a stable internet connection. If possible, connect to Wi-Fi instead of using mobile data.

Setting

  • Choose a clean, professional background. Avoid distractions. You may want to use a neutral wall or a spacious area without unnecessary objects. Most programs allow you to choose a different background if needed.
  • Ensure your face is well lit. It is best to use natural light or a desk lamp to avoid shadows.

Choose a dress code

Dress as you would for an in-person interview. Choose a business style, even if you are at home. You should look professional.

How to behave during the interview

  • Look at the camera, not the screen. This creates the impression of direct contact with the interviewer. Be friendly and impartial.
  • Show that you are listening attentively by nodding your head or giving short verbal confirmations (e.g., “yes,” “I see”).
  • Allow the interviewer to finish their questions or comments before responding. Never interrupt.

Prepare a few questions

Research information about the company, its values, and culture. This will help you answer questions more confidently. Prepare a few questions about the company and the position the day before to demonstrate your interest.

After the interview

At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer for the opportunity to talk and express your interest in the position. Ask about the next steps in the selection process. Send a short thank-you letter within 24 hours. By following these tips, you will be able to make a positive impression on the interviewer and increase your chances of success in the hiring process.
