We invite you to the screening of the Ukrainian film Mavka: The True Myth in Edmonton.
The event will take place on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at Metro Cinema, Edmonton, AB, and the organizers of the event are Film Hive & Ukraine Harmony.
Mavka: The True Myth is a romantic fantasy from FILM.UA Group, created by the team that worked on the animated hit Mavka: The Forest Song. The film is part of the Mavka Universe, but offers a completely different, darker and more mystical interpretation of Ukrainian mythology, where mavkas are not fairy-tale creatures, but dangerous and bizarre forest creatures.
The events of the film unfold in the ancient forests of Ukraine during Mermaid Week—a magical period when mythical creatures emerge from Dark Lake to hunt for human souls. This is where a group of biology students go on a scientific expedition, and this is where the fates of the main characters — Mavka and Lukyan — intersect.
At the center of the story is Mavka, a mystical and dangerous forest nymph who, instead of destroying Lukian, falls in love with him. Their feelings are born on the border between two worlds — the human and the otherworldly — where mermaids and other nymphs are ready to do anything to bring Mavka back to the dark side. This is a story about love, choice, the nature of inner darkness, and the power of light that can change even a predetermined fate.
This screening will be a great opportunity to see a new Ukrainian fantasy on the big screen, immerse yourself in the atmosphere of ancient legends, and discover a more mature, dramatic, and emotional reinterpretation of the image of Mavka.
